Work

The board

Add cards to a project's board, move them through To do, In progress and Done, show only ready work, and open a card to work on it.

The board holds a project's work as cards, one column per stage. Every project has one board. To open it, press 3 in a project, or pick Work under the project in the sidebar.

Northfold's board for Harbor 2.4. Drag a card; switch to the Map to see what each card waits on.
  1. The project's goal. Click it to change it.
  2. A card. Drag it to another column, or click it to open it.
  3. Switch between the board and its Map.

The columns

Every board has the same four stages. You can't add, rename or remove them.

  • Triage is a row above the columns for work nobody has sorted yet. It shows only while it holds a card.
  • To do is work that is ready to start.
  • In progress is work someone is doing.
  • Done is finished work. It stays folded into a narrow strip at the right edge until you click it. Open, it lists cards by the week they finished: This week, Last week and Earlier.

Each column's header shows how many cards it holds. A card shows its title and number, and its labels, due date, comments and assignees when it has them.

Add a card

Point at To do or In progress, then click Add card at the bottom of the column.

Type a title and press ↵. The card goes to the bottom of that column.

Press Esc to close the field.

When Triage is showing, it has its own Add to triage… field at the end of the row. Done has no Add card: a card gets there by being moved.

Move a card

Drag the card to another column, or up and down within one. To send a card back to triage while Triage is hidden, drag it onto the Drop back into triage strip that appears above the columns as you drag.

Moving a card into Done closes it, and moving it out of Done opens it again, so you don't need to change its status yourself. If the card is a question, dropping it on Done asks What did we decide? Type the answer and click record, or press Esc to skip it; add the decision stays on the row in Done for later.

To move a card with the keyboard:

Press Tab until the card is focused.

Press Space to pick it up.

Use the arrow keys to move it to the column and place you want.

Press Space to drop it, or Esc to put it back where it was.

Open a card

Click a card. It opens beside the board, so the columns stay in view. To step through the cards in the same column, press [ for the previous card and ] for the next; at the end of the column they wrap around. To close the card, click the × in its header, or press Esc while you're working in it.

To open a card in a new browser tab instead, hold ⌘ or ⇧ as you click.

On the classic layout, an open card shows in a split view beside the board. When the window is too narrow for that, it opens in a sheet over the board, and [ and ] do nothing until you close it.

Show only work that is ready

When To do holds a question nobody has claimed and that waits on nothing, Ready to pick up appears above the columns. Click it to show only the cards in To do that nobody is assigned to and that wait on no unfinished card. Click it again to show every card.

See the plan as a map

When the project has a goal, a question, or cards that wait on other cards, Board and Map appear above the columns. Map draws each card and what it waits on. Board brings the columns back.

The same board on its Map: each card and what it waits on.

Availability

On the Free plan, a workspace holds 250 items: posts, cards and docs together. Archived cards don't count. Paid plans have no limit.

Troubleshooting

Add card isn't there

Add card shows when the pointer is over its column or the column has focus. Point at the column, or press Tab into it. Done never has one.

Cards are missing from To do

Ready to pick up is on, so To do shows only cards nobody has taken that wait on nothing. Click Ready to pick up again. If the card isn't on the board at all, it may be in Done: click the strip to open it, or press / and search for it by name.

There is no Map button

The board offers the Map only when there is a plan to draw: a goal, a question, or cards that wait on others. Click Set a goal above the columns to give the project one.

You've reached the Free item limit

The workspace has 250 posts, cards and docs, which is the Free plan's limit. To make room, archive cards you no longer need: open the card, click its status (Active), and pick Archive. Or upgrade to Basic, which has no limit.
