Panels: opening, closing and going back
Open a post, doc or card in a panel beside your page, open it as a full page, close it, and go back to exactly where you were.
A panel opens beside the page you're on and shows a post, a doc or a card. The page stays where it is, so you can read or work in the panel and then close it without losing your place.
- Your page. It stays where it is while the panel is open.
- The path to this page. Click a step in it to go up.
Open something beside your page
Click a post in Home's feed, a card on the board, or a row in Everything. It opens in a panel to the right of the page. In a narrow window, the panel slides in over the page instead, and closes the same way.
When the panel opens, the keyboard moves into it. Esc and ⌘Ctrl↵ then act on the panel, not on the page behind it.
- Click anywhere on the post to open it.
Close a panel and get your page back
Press Esc or click × at the top right of the panel, and the panel closes. Your page is where you left it, scrolled to the same place. The keyboard goes back to the row you clicked, so you can move straight on to the next one.
Go back
Your browser's Back button closes what you just opened. Press it once and the panel closes, with your page unchanged. Press it again and you leave the page.
Open a panel as a full page
Posts and docs have a page of their own. Cards don't; they always open in a panel.
Open the post or doc in a panel.
Press ⌘Ctrl↵, or click Open full page, the expand icon at the top of the panel.
To open a post's page in a new browser tab instead, hold ⌘Ctrl and click it in the list.
A full page has a back arrow (←) at the top left. It takes you back to the page you came from, scrolled to where you were. Next to it, the project's name takes you up to the project.

Keyboard shortcuts
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Esc | Close the panel the keyboard is in |
| ⌘Ctrl↵ | Open the post or doc in the panel as a full page |
| ⌘Ctrl + click | Open a post's page in a new tab |
| F6 / ⇧ShiftF6 | Move the keyboard to the next or previous area: the sidebar, the page, the panel, the dock |
On the classic layout
This page describes the new layout, which is still a preview. On the classic layout, clicking a post opens its full page rather than a panel, a card opens in a sheet at the side, and Back leaves the page.
Troubleshooting
Esc doesn't close the panel
The keyboard is on the page, not in the panel, because you clicked the page after the panel opened. Click inside the panel, or press F6 until the panel has the keyboard, then press Esc. Or click ×.
The panel is still open on the next page
A panel stays open when you go to another page, so you can keep it as a reference. Close it with × or Esc when you're done.
The full-page key does nothing
⌘Ctrl↵ opens a full page only for posts and docs; a card stays in its panel. If you're typing a comment, ⌘Ctrl↵ sends it instead. Click Open full page at the top of the panel.
