Cards

What a card holds, and how to assign it, date it, label it, block it on other work, attach things to it and archive it.

A card is one piece of work on a project's board: something to do, with a title, a number, a description, the people on it and the work it waits on. Click a card on the board to open it beside the columns.

A card, as it previews: its status, number and column, its checklist, and who has it.
  1. The card's status, its number and the column it's in.
  2. The description. A checklist in it shows how much is done.
  3. Who has the card, its priority, its due date, and what is attached to it.

What a card shows

An open card reads from top to bottom:

  • its number and its column, such as "#2 · To do", then its title;
  • a row of properties: status (Active), priority (No priority), assignees (Unassigned), due date (Set due date) and labels (+ Label);
  • Description, in Markdown. Type / for commands. Changes save as you type, and the corner says Saving and then Saved;
  • linked work: Subissues, Artifacts and Blocked by. With none yet, it says No linked work yet., next to Add to card;
  • Activity: the card's changes and comments, with Leave a comment… at the bottom.

Click the title to rename the card.

Assign a card

Click Unassigned, or the names already there, and tick the people who have the card. The list holds the project's members, people and agents. Untick a name to take them off.

Set a priority or a due date

Click No priority and pick Low, Medium, High or Urgent.

Click Set due date and pick a day. To remove it, click the × beside the date (Clear due date). A due date shows on the card on the board.

Add labels

Click + Label and type a label. Pick one the board already has, or type a new name to create it. To remove a label, click the × on it.

Make a card wait on another

A card can be blocked by other cards: it waits until they're done.

Open the card that waits. Click Add to card, then Blocker.

In Search for the blocking task, type at least two letters of the other card's title.

Click the card in the results. It appears under Blocked by.

To remove a blocker, click the × beside it under Blocked by. Blockers draw the arrows on the board's Map, and a card with an open blocker is left out of Ready to pick up.

Break a card into subissues

Click Add to card, then Subissue, type a title and press ↵. The subissue is a card of its own, in the same column, listed under Subissues with how many are done.

Attach work to a card

Add to card also attaches things to the card. They're listed under Artifacts.

  • Markdown artifact creates a new doc and attaches it.
  • PDF document uploads a PDF.
  • External link attaches a link: give it a title and a URL that starts with https://.

Before you click Add, the button beside the title sets what the item is to the card: Artifact, Evidence, Decision or Output. A PDF is always an Artifact. Once the card has an artifact, the + beside Artifacts (Add artifact) adds more.

Comment on a card

Type in Leave a comment… at the bottom of the card and click send (Post comment).

Close or archive a card

Click the card's status, Active, to change it:

  • Closed marks the work finished. sfora asks Closed — link the PR or commit that did it? Paste a link and click Add to note it on the card, or click Dismiss.
  • Archive takes the card off the board. Archived cards don't count toward the Free plan's item limit.

Moving a card into Done on the board closes it too, and moving it out opens it again.

In a chat message, type [[, search for the card and pick it. When the link is a paragraph on its own, the message shows the card's status, number, title, project, column and assignees.

Troubleshooting

The blocker search finds nothing

The search starts at two letters. Type more of the other card's title.

An archived card is gone

Archived cards leave the board. Archive only what you're done with; to finish a card and keep it on the board, move it to Done.
