The board's Map
See a project's plan as a map of cards, what each one waits on and the goal they lead to, then change the plan or open a card.
The board's Map draws a project's plan: each card, the cards it waits on, and the goal they all lead to. It is the other view of the board. Open it with Map above the board's columns.
- Switch back to the columns with Board.
- The Map, and the goal it leads to.
- The plan: each card and what it waits on. On a phone it is a list.
Open the Map
Open the board: press 3 in the project.
Click Map above the columns. The header reads Map, then "toward" and the project's goal.
Board and Map show only when there is a plan to draw: the project has a goal, a question, a card that waits on another card, or a card with subissues. To come back to the columns, click Board.
Read the Map
The goal is the ringed circle at the right. Every card is a diamond, and an arrow runs from a card to the card that waits on it. A card that nothing waits on leads into the goal.
A card's ring and color say where it stands. Click Legend at the bottom left to see each one with a count:
| In the legend | What it means |
|---|---|
| Goal | The project's goal |
| Milestone | A card whose subissues are on the map. Its subissues share a row, labeled with its title. |
| Up next | In To do, and waits on nothing that's unfinished |
| Waiting | Waits on a card that isn't done |
| In progress | In In progress |
| Not yet specified | Still in Triage |
| Done | Finished in the last two weeks |
| Held up by | A dashed orange arrow: the card it points to is held up by that card |
The Map shows only cards that are part of the plan: cards with a blocker, cards that block another, and cards with or under subissues. The count at the bottom right says how many cards are on the map and how many are not.
Point at a card, or move to it with the arrow keys, and the Map lights the path from that card to the goal and dims everything else.
Open a card from the Map
Click a card. It opens beside the Map, where you can change it as on the board. With a card open, press [ or ] for the previous or next card. Press Esc to close it.
To open a card on the board in a new tab instead, hold ⌘Ctrl or ⇧Shift as you click. If you switch to Board with a card open, the card stays open beside the columns.
Change the plan
The Map is drawn from the cards; you change the plan on the cards themselves.
- Make a card wait on another: open it, click Add to card, then Blocker. See Cards.
- Group work under a milestone: open the larger card, click Add to card, then Subissue.
- Set the goal: click Board, then Set a goal above the columns.
The Map updates as soon as the card changes.
Find a card
Type in Search the map. Matching cards light up, and the field shows how many match. With the Map focused, ← and → step from one match to the next.
See the plan as a list
Click List at the top right. The list groups the cards as the legend does: Up next, In progress, Waiting, Milestones, Not yet specified, then Done recently and Not on the map, folded. A waiting card says what it waits on, such as "on #213, #222". Click Map to go back.
Keyboard shortcuts

| = / - | Zoom in or out |
| 0 or Home | Fit the whole plan in view |
| [ / ] | With a card open: the previous or next card |
| Esc | Close the card you're working in |
Drag to move around the Map, and scroll to zoom.
Troubleshooting
There is no Map button
The board offers the Map only when there is a plan: a goal, a question, a card that waits on another, or a card with subissues. Click Set a goal above the columns to give the project one.
A card isn't on the Map
The Map shows only cards linked into the plan, and done cards for two weeks. Give the card a blocker, make it block another card, or make it a subissue. Not on the map in the list view shows the rest.
The Map is too small to read
Click a card in the list view, or zoom in with =. 0 fits the plan back in view.
