The layout
The four parts of the sfora layout, the sidebar, your page, the panel and the dock, what each is for, and how to arrange a panel.
The layout is the frame around everything you open in a workspace. It has four parts: the sidebar on the left, your page in the middle, a panel beside the page when you open something, and the dock along the bottom. Every screen in a workspace uses it.
- Your page: where you are now. The panel opens to its right.
- The path to this page. Click a step in it to go up.
What each part is for
- The sidebar lists what's in the workspace: your favorites, your projects and their chats, the docs, the skills. It's closed until you open it. To open or close it, click Contents at the left end of the dock, or press ⌘Ctrl\. On a screen wider than 1440 pixels it starts open. See The sidebar.
- Your page is the place you went to: Home, a board, a doc, a chat. It fills whatever room the sidebar and panels leave.
- A panel opens beside your page when you click a post, a doc or a card, so you can read it without leaving the page. See Panels.
- The dock sits under your page. It takes you to Home and the workspace's other places, opens your inbox, and opens search. See The dock.
Move the keyboard between the parts
Press F6 to move the keyboard to the next part: the sidebar, your page, each open panel, then the dock, and round again. ⇧ShiftF6 goes the other way. It works from anywhere, a text field included.
Arrange a panel
A panel opens to the right of your page. You can resize it, zoom it, float it or move it.
- Resize: drag the line between your page and the panel.
- Zoom: click Zoom at the top of the panel, or press ⌥AltZ with the keyboard in the panel. The panel fills the window. Press ⌥AltZ again, or Esc, to put it back.
- Float: click Float, or press ⌥AltF. The panel becomes a window over your page.
- Move: click Move, float, hide or zoom… at the top of the panel and pick a place: Left of Page, Right of Page, Above Page or Below Page. For a floating panel, Dock puts it back beside the page.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘Ctrl\ | Open or close the sidebar |
| F6 / ⇧ShiftF6 | Move the keyboard to the next or previous part |
| ⌥AltZ | Zoom the panel the keyboard is in, or put it back |
| ⌥AltF | Float the panel the keyboard is in |
| Esc | Step out of a zoomed panel, or close the panel the keyboard is in |
All of them are on the Keyboard shortcuts page.
On the classic layout
This page describes the new layout, which is still a preview. On the classic layout, the sidebar starts open and also lists Home, Everything, Favorites, Library, Map and Skills at the top. The dock's left button is Up a level instead of Contents, and there is no Everything in the dock.
Troubleshooting
The sidebar is gone
It's closed. Click Contents at the left end of the dock, or press ⌘Ctrl\. sfora remembers whether you left it open or closed.
A panel covers the whole window
The panel is zoomed. Press Esc, or click Zoom at the top of the panel again.
Float and Zoom aren't at the top of the panel
The panel is too narrow to show them. Drag the line between your page and the panel to make it wider, or click Move, float, hide or zoom…, which is always there.

Troubleshooting
The problems people meet in their first days with sfora, each with its likely cause and a link to the page that fixes it.
Panels: opening, closing and going back
Open a post, doc or card in a panel beside your page, open it as a full page, close it, and go back to exactly where you were.
