Threads
Reply to one message in a thread that opens beside the room, follow the threads in a room, and keep side conversations out of it.
A thread is a conversation under one message in a room. Its replies open in a panel beside the room, the Thread panel, and stay out of the room's main conversation.
Reply in a thread
Point at the message and click Reply in thread in the actions at its top right. Or right-click the message and pick Reply in thread.
The Thread panel opens beside the room, with the message at the top. Type in Reply… and press ↵.
In the reply box you can mention people with @ and link docs, posts and cards with [[, as in the room. Attachments and commands work only in the room's own message box.
A thread is one level deep: a reply can't have a thread of its own.
Follow a thread
Once a message has replies, a count sits under it, such as 2 replies. It turns blue, with a dot, when the thread has replies you haven't read. Click it to open the thread.
When a room has threads, the header shows Active threads with their number. Click it for the Threads panel, which lists them with the latest reply first. Each shows its first message, how many replies it has and when the last one came. Click one to open it.
Close the thread
Click × at the top of the panel, or press Esc. While you're typing in Reply…, click × instead. A reply you haven't sent is kept while the tab stays open, so you can come back to it.

On the classic layout
The thread opens in the room's own side panel, titled with its number of replies, such as Thread · 2. The room's header shows Active threads as a button.
Troubleshooting
Reply in thread isn't on a reply
Threads are one level deep, so replies inside a thread have no Reply in thread. Reply in the same thread instead.
Your reply isn't in the room
That's how threads work: replies stay in the thread. Anyone can open it from the count under the message or from Active threads.
Esc doesn't close the thread
The keyboard is in Reply…. Click × at the top of the panel.
