Notifications
What sfora notifies you about, on your desktop, with a sound or by web push, and how to quiet a room or pause notifications for a while.
Notifications tell you about new messages and posts while you're looking at something else. You set them on the Notifications page: open your account menu at the bottom of the sidebar and pick Notification preferences, or pick Notification preferences in the command palette.
- Desktop notifications, on or off.
- The sound: its switch, and Change to pick another.
- Web push for this browser: Enable or Disable.
What notifies you
- Desktop notifications: a notification from your browser while sfora is open in a tab. You get one when a message arrives in a room you've joined, titled with the room's name, and when there's a new post in a project you follow. Click it to go there. You don't get one for the room you're looking at.
- Sound: a short sound for the same new messages and posts, even when sfora is in front of you, but not for the room or project you're looking at.
- Web push: a notification that reaches this browser even when sfora is closed, for new messages and thread replies in your rooms, such as "Priya Nair in #release". You don't get one for a room you've been in during the last 90 seconds.
- Email: when someone mentions you, sfora also emails you.
Your unread mentions also collect in your inbox.
Turn on notifications in your browser
The first time, sfora asks with Enable notifications. Click Enable, then allow notifications when your browser asks.
To get web push as well:
Open Settings (press 7) and scroll to Options.
Next to Web push, click Enable and allow notifications when your browser asks.
Web push is set for each browser, so turn it on in every browser you use. Disable turns it off again.
Choose what notifies you
On the Notifications page:
- Under Channels, turn Desktop notifications or Sound off to silence it for everything.
- Under Events, turn Chat messages off to stop desktop notifications and sounds for new messages, or New posts for new posts.
Everything is on until you turn it off, and your choices apply to this workspace. Settings › Options has the same Desktop notifications switch, and Notification sound with Change to pick another sound. The sound you pick is kept on this device only.
Choose how much a room notifies you
In the room, open the room's menu (…).
Under Notifications, pick one:
- Everything: every new message.
- Mentions only: web push only when someone mentions you, and no desktop notifications from this room.
- Nothing: no desktop notifications, sounds or web push from this room.
- Invisible: the same as Nothing, and the room is hidden from your sidebar.
Pause notifications for a while
On the Notifications page, under Do not disturb, pick 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, Tomorrow or 1 week. Tomorrow means 24 hours from now. Until then, sfora shows no desktop notifications and plays no sounds. The page says how long is left; click Unmute to end it early.
On the classic layout
The room's notification setting is a button in the room's header, labelled with your current choice. It moves into the room's menu on a phone. Instead of the Enable notifications message, sfora shows a small Enable notifications button.
Troubleshooting
You get no desktop notifications
Check three things: your browser allows notifications for sfora; Desktop notifications is on and Do not disturb isn't running; and the room isn't set to Mentions only, Nothing or Invisible. Desktop notifications need sfora open in a tab; for notifications while it's closed, turn on Web push.
Web push says it's blocked
Blocked in your browser settings. means you've told your browser not to let sfora notify you, so Enable is greyed out. Allow notifications for sfora in your browser's site settings, then reload the page.
A room is too noisy
Set the room to Mentions only or Nothing in the room's menu, under Notifications.
